At PIC Kids Summer, young artists (ages 7-11) will go on an adventure through the creative process as they explore theater, movement, and music. Each week follows a different theme, and all weeks will culminate in a sharing of the young artists' original work on Fridays at 2:30. The number of participants each week is capped at 14 and the 2 instructors will be assisted by a UMass intern, and 2 CITs.

July 17-21 Make 'Em Laugh (1 spot left)

Instructors: Brianna Sloane and Andrew Roberts

We explore all things physical comedy this week in a vaudeville extravaganza!  Embracing a spirit of play and joy, we will draw on elements from classic comedy characters (commedia dell’arte) and story formats (vaudeville, slapstick) to develop our own vaudeville sketch show.

July 24-28 Growl and Groove (1 spot left)

Instructors: Tracy Einstein and Richie Barshay

This week we’ll immerse ourselves in theater and music activities that draw on natural elements and animal characteristics. Together we will build habitats and stories using animal-inspired games, musical exploration, and imaginative play. Animals will inspire characters and characters will inspire a musical landscape, culminating in a theatrical journey through a new animal world.

July 31-Aug 4 Soundscapes and Sorcery (4 spots left)

Instructors: Tracy Einstein and Richie Barshay

Rhythm and rhymes converge in this whimsical week of group storytelling, improvisational music making, writing, and more! We’ll conjure new worlds as we create poems with a soundtrack and go on an enchanted exploration of our surroundings using theater, drumming, and movement, culminating in a sharing of our collaborative rhythmic soundscape.

August 7-11 Five Day Play (1 spot left)

Instructors: Brianna Sloane and Andrew Roberts

Together we  will embark on the creative challenge of making our own play from scratch! What will it be!? That all depends on you and what you love. We will use theater games, improvisation, and writing exercises to develop and explore characters, setting and story. Joyful collaboration will guide our creative process, as we unlock the magic of storytelling.

Annual Youth Programs

Youth Performance Festival

The Youth Performance Festival (YPF), a collaboration between Play Incubation Collective and the Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley, is a FREE opportunity for youth artists ages 8-18 to create original performance pieces under the guidance of mentor artists in the fields of music, dance, theater, poetry/spoken word, and video.

YPF centers the creative agency of young artists, and is committed to supporting them as they discover their own creative processes. We had an incredible festival this year with 250 audience members attending in support of these inspiring youth artists. Check out this wonderful feature by Northampton High School Students (one of whom was a 2021 YPF Youth Artist) about this year's festival!

Family-Friendly Salon

We hosted our first annual Family Friendly Salon this fall featuring both youth and adult presenters!

PIC Family Friendly Salons are an opportunity for performing artists and audience members of all ages to come together in celebration of the artistic process. The lineup is curated to appeal to a family-friendly audience, and the performers give audience members a peak into creative practice by sharing inspiration and answering audience questions. The Salon takes place by the big red frame sculpture. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets and low-seat chairs, and are welcome to come early and stay late to pick apples and enjoy the beauty of Park Hill! Thank you to our wonderful presenting artists and the 80-person multigenerational audience for making our first year hosting this salon a huge success!
